At Raincity Dance, a strong emphasis is placed on students’ ballet training as it provides a strong technical foundation for other styles of dance.
The Recreational Ballet program is a great option for those who prefer a ballet class that meets once a week and does not have an exam.

 

BALLET

T1

Ballet Technique 1

7+ years

Basic Ballet technique for students who do not have previous ballet experience. This class focuses on basic positions of the body, building co-ordination and control, transfers of weight, elevation and stamina, with use of both parallel and turn-out. Class work is non-syllabus and there are no exams. The class will prepare choreography for the end of the year recital.

9+ years

Ballet technique for students who have previous ballet experience. This class focuses on classical positions of the body, increasing co-ordination and control, transfers of weight in turn-out, pirouettes, elevation and grand allegro. Class includes barre, centre work, and cool down. Class work is non-syllabus and there are no exams. The class will prepare choreography for the end of the year recital.

Level-Up Ballet

11+ years

Level-Up Ballet is great for older students who are new to ballet or returning after time away. Dancers will build a strong technical foundation, focusing on alignment, line, control, and coordination in a supportive, age-appropriate setting. It’s also ideal for those with experience in other styles—such as jazz, acro, or contemporary—looking to refine their overall performance quality. Students progress at a comfortable pace and have the opportunity to move into more advanced levels when they’re ready.​ Class work is non-syllabus and there are no exams. The class will prepare choreography for the end of the year recital.

Ballet technique for older students who have a minimum of 3 years previous ballet experience. Adult Beginner Ballet

16+ years

Introduction to ballet with open class work at barre and in centre. No prior dance experience is necessary. Focusing on posture and alignment, students will work on basic ballet vocabulary, basic positions of the body, building co-ordination and control, transfers of weight, medium allegro, basic ballet combinations in an adult style environment.  No recital choreography.

Adult Intermediate Ballet

16+ years

Building on the steps learned in Beginner Ballet with open class work at barre and in centre.  This class focuses on classical positions of the body, increasing co-ordination and control, pirouettes, adage, medium and grand allegro. Class includes barre, centre work, and cool down. Students will work on more complex combinations in an adult style environment. No recital choreography.

Ballet Repertoire

14+ years - Adult

Study two variations selected from classical ballets. A barre warm up, and preparatory exercises for the variations. There is the option of presenting the work for an RAD exam. Flat shoes or en pointe. No recital choreography.

Ballet - Pointe

Our Pointe classes are designed for dancers with a strong foundation in classical ballet who are ready to take the next step in their training. Students will focus on building strength, alignment, and technique while learning the fundamentals of dancing en pointe. Emphasis is placed on safety, proper preparation, and individual progression to ensure each dancer develops confidence and artistry in their pointe work.

Teacher approval is required before beginning pointe.

Pre-Pointe Conditioning

9+ years

Conditioning, massage techniques, and preparatory exercises building towards ballet on pointe or for those returning to pointe work. Useful for dancers of all levels and genres to keep the body in good dancing shape. Strong focus on core, legs and feet. No recital choreography.

POINTE BEG

Beginner Pointe  

11+ years

Beginner Pointe class for ballet. Dancers may progress from ballet flats to pointe shoes based on their readiness. Introduction to pointe work with focus on safe practice. Non-syllabus and no exams. No recital choreography.

 

Pre-requisite:

1 year pre-pointe experience 

and Studio approval

Pointe Technique 3 

11+ years

Specific class for ballet dance in pointe shoes. Basic pointe work with focus on double leg work. Non-syllabus and no exams. The class will prepare choreography for the end of year recital.

13+ years

Specific class for working in pointe shoes. Intermediate level pointe work with added focus of single leg work and pirouettes. Non-syllabus and no exams. The class will prepare choreography for the end of the year recital.

Pointe Technique 5

15+ years

Specific class for working in pointe shoes. Advanced pointe work with added focus of single leg work and pirouettes. Non-syllabus and no exams. The class will prepare choreography for the end of the year recital.

AcroDance

"Acro" seamlessly merges classical dance and acrobatic precision. It’s characterized by unique choreography that combines music, emotional expression, graceful lines, and acrobatic movements within the dance context. 

 

Acro is a fun but demanding style requiring dancers to train in both dance and acrobatics. Techniques encompassing balancing, limbering, tumbling, and partnering, all centred on flexibility, contortion, and strength. 

*Due to the physicality of the acrobatic skills in Acro, experience is a more important part in selecting a level than age. Please reach out to administration if you have questions about placement.

AcroDance Technique 1

Ages 7+ or Younger Beginners

Learn the fundamentals of acrobatic tricks following the Acrobatic Arts curriculum. Dancers will work on flexibility, strength, balancing, limbering, and tumbling skills. This class will prepare choreography for the year-end recital.

T2

AcroDance Technique 2

9+ years or Older Beginners

Acrobatic Arts techniques combined with dance and performed to music. Building on skills learned in Arco Tech 1 emphasizing increased control and coordination. The class will prepare choreography for the end of the year recital.

Pre-requisite:

         A minimum of 1 year of AcroDance or gymnastics training

         and Studio approval.

ACRO

T3

AcroDance Technique 3

11+ years with Experience

Learning more advanced techniques. Chest stands, bridge, walkovers, cartwheels, round-offs, limbering, lifts and balances. The class will prepare choreography for the end of the year recital.

Pre-requisite: 

        A minimum of 3 years of AcroDance or gymnastics training

        and Studio approval.

ACRO

T4

AcroDance Technique 4

13+ years with Experience

Technique progressing from previous years, introducing aerials. Advanced choreography. The class will prepare choreography for the end of the year recital.

Pre-requisite:

       A minimum of 4 years AcroDance or gymnastics training

       and Studio approval.

Contemporary

Contemporary classes combine elements from a wide variety of dance with changes in rhythm, speed, and direction. Contemporary uses the controlled legwork of ballet, a focus on the torso, floor work, and a quest for emotive expression. 

To prepare for Contemporary  younger dancers should focus on ballet and jazz training.

An Introduction to contemporary. Dancers should have some experience with ballet and Jazz or modern. Class includes a warm up, technique and floor work, combinations. The class will prepare choreography for the end of the year recital.

11+ years

Building on movements learned in Technique 2 with an emphasis on increased control and coordination with more challenging combinations, descents, and lifts. Dancers should have some experience in Ballet, Jazz or Modern. The class will prepare choreography for the end of the year recital.

 

Contemporary and Lyrical are combined for the 2025-26 Regular Season.

13+ years

Intermediate contemporary combinations for students with at least 4 years of dance experience and 1 year of contemporary experience. The class will prepare choreography for the end of the year recital.

Advanced contemporary combinations for students with at least 6 years of dance experience and 2 years of contemporary experience. The class will prepare choreography for the end of the year recital.

Jazz

Jazz classes focus on technique, flexibility, musicality and performance. A strong ballet foundation is essential for achieving correct jazz technique. By combining jazz in addition to ballet training, our students become more versatile, well rounded dancers while opening the doors to the popular  lyrical and contemporary dance styles.

7+ years

Fun beginner technique classes in basic Jazz technique. Class includes a warm up, basic jazz steps in the centre and across the floor work. This class will prepare a recital choreography at the end of the year recital.

Jazz Technique 2

9+ years

Developing Jazz technique including warm up, walks, jumps, leaps, pirouettes. Technique class building on Technique 1 movements with increased control and coordination. The class will prepare choreography for the end of the year recital.

Level-Up Jazz

11+ years

For older students who are new to Jazz or aspiring to meet the challenges of the next level. Dancers will build a strong technical foundation, focusing on the jazz basics in a supportive, age-appropriate setting. Students progress at a comfortable pace and have the opportunity to move into more advanced levels when they’re ready. The class will prepare choreography for the end of the year recital.

Hip Hop

Hip Hop classes focus on rhythm, conditioning and basic street dance elements. Hip Hop classes help to build students confidence and personal expression through dance.

Fun beginner technique class, introducing some basic Hip Hop steps. The class will prepare a recital choreography for the end of the year recital.

Lyrical

Lyrical embodies various aspects of ballet, jazz, acrobatics, and modern dance to create a flowing smooth style. The focus is on storytelling through the body. 

To prepare for Lyrical younger dancers should focus on ballet and jazz training.

Focusing on fluidity of  technical movement gained in Ballet and Jazz. Building emotive storytelling. This class will prepare a recital choreography for the end of the year recital.

11+ years

More advanced combinations and transitions done with focus on increased control, coordination, maturity. The class will prepare a recital choreography for the end of the year recital.

15+ years

Modern

Modern dance is a dynamic and expressive form of movement that emphasizes creativity, exploration, and individuality, opposing traditional ballet techniques. It incorporates elements of various dance styles, movement exploration techniques, and exploration of space. Modern dance often delves into themes of emotion, identity, and social commentary through innovative choreography.

To prepare for Modern younger dancers should focus on ballet and jazz training.

Modern Technique 3

11+ years

A beginner modern dance curriculum for ages 11-13 focuses on developing body awareness, strength, and foundational techniques like weight shifts, contraction/release, and floor work. Students explore musicality and creativity through guided improvisation, expressive movement exercises, and choreography practice. The class will prepare choreography for the end of the year recital.

MOD

T4

Modern Technique 4

13+ years

For students with 4 years or more years of dance experience, focusing on modern vocabulary, strength, use of space, gravity, and floor work. Students build more dynamic movement chains, deeper improvisation techniques, and complex choreographic structures while developing their unique artistic voices. The class will prepare choreography for the end of the year recital.

Training

Additional training classes to support technique classes. Whether for building strength to support jumps, turns, and lifts or increasing joint range of motion to improve agility and reduce injury risk. Additional training classes are encouraged for all dancers. 

Stretch 

Stretch Class

7+ years, Registered Students

A complementary class teaching stretching techniques to increase flexibility and support their bodies in the rigours of dance training. Offered only during the Regular Dance season (September - June). For registered students only. 

Offered in studio and online (via Zoom) at the same time. 

Condition

Conditioning Class

9+ years

Conditioning is a strength and stability class designed to support dancers in building the physical foundation needed for safe and effective training. Drawing on elements of yoga, Pilates, and Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT), the class focuses on core strength, flexibility, alignment, and body awareness.


Through targeted exercises and controlled movement patterns, dancers improve posture, balance, coordination, and muscular endurance. This class helps prevent injury, enhances overall technique, and supports dancers in developing the strength and control needed for all styles of dance.

Turns

Jumps and Turns Class

12+ years

Jumps & Turns is an energetic technique class designed to help dancers develop strength, control, and confidence in their turning and jumping skills. Through focused exercises and progressions, dancers work on pirouettes, traveling turns, leaps, and dynamic jumps while improving balance, coordination, and elevation. 

 

The class emphasizes proper technique, body alignment, and safe landing mechanics, helping dancers build power and precision in their movement. Ideal for students looking to strengthen their technical foundation and add excitement and athleticism to their dancing.
